The child of ex- South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related charges at the beginning of her trial in the harbor city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over remarks she made on digital networks four years ago during fatal unrest in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her parent.

A week of anarchy in various areas of the country in mid-2021, including looting and intentional burning, caused at least 300 individuals killed and caused damage worth an projected $2.8 billion (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of encouraging this violence and faces allegations of encouragement to commit terrorism and civil unrest.

History of the Case

The protests were concentrated in the regions of Gauteng and KZN and were triggered by the ex-leader's detention for ignoring a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an probe into accusations of impropriety while he was in power.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has consistently refuted the accusations against her, with her attorney earlier calling the prosecution's legal argument as weak.

She has also frequently said the allegations against her were an bid to resolve political scores with her dad after he founded his own party and campaigned against the African National Congress.

Endorsement and Court Representation

This was echoed by the foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and family-related harassment" against the former president and his relatives.

A handful of backers from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other organization officials attended the hearings inside.

The defendant's representatives has maintained that the testimony presented by government lawyers is insufficient and lacks concrete grounds for a conviction.

Key Points of the Trial

  • Digital statements from the past form the foundation of the state's argument
  • Deadly protests in 2021 resulted in major casualties and monetary damage
  • The accused is charged with multiple charges of encouragement to public disorder
  • Court trials are anticipated to proceed for several weeks

The legal proceedings continues as the prosecution and defense present their arguments before the court in what is projected to be a closely watched legal battle with major political implications for South Africa.
