Larry Summers Leaves from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a batch of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.
The economist remarked in a statement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have participated, optimistic about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their development".
The former Harvard president, who formerly led the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his relationship with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released emails demonstrated that Summers communicated with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for suspected sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the technology organization said it accepted his decision to resign.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the perspective he brought to the governing body," the company remarked.
Legislative Background
This announcement follows after the two houses of Congress decided on recently to endorse a bill that would mandate the US justice department to release its documents on Epstein.
The measure will then head to the desk of President Trump for signature. Trump has stated he plans to sign the measure, after reversing his position on the subject following pressure from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-connected correspondence disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago included several well-known personalities in the financier's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The communications revealed that the economist and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often trying to link the academic to influential global figures.
Individual Statement
After the emails were made available with the public, he stated he took "total ownership for my misguided decision to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to restore confidence and repair connections with the individuals closest to me".
Professional History
Summers held senior posts under two Democratic presidents; serving as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He presided over Harvard from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public duties recently on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive policy institute in the capital where he was a prominent member, announced that Summers was ceased to be connected with the institution.
Summers joined the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a defeated move to replace its CEO the company leader.
